Objective and Development

The HKSTLA Mission & Objectives

To act as a common platform for dialogue among ship liners, freight forwarders, logistics companies, and offer a channel for members to have a better understanding of the market, thereby, improve their operations and businesses.

To disseminate information about the market and the industry, and to organize industry or industry-related training for its members. These activities help lift their professional standing.

To solicit expert opinions affecting the industry and the business from members and from other interested parties, to liaise with other bodies and to be the collective representative of its members on industry affairs and on matters affecting the same.

To organize and co-ordinate activities and other services that help to enhance business relations among members, as well as the relations between members, and other parties, professional and government.

To promote, in general, the shipping and logistics industry and to help establish opportunities in new markets.

A Review & Future of the HKSTLA

Since its establishment, the Association has gained acceptance and the recognition as the industry’s authoritative voice from official bodies and governing authorities in Hong Kong and elsewhere. It has also supported its members on a variety of matters and technical issues related to their operations and the welfare of their businesses.

  • ? Conducted seminar and workshop in which lawyers or other speakers spoke on topics such as the Import and Export Ordinance, Prosecution under the Ordinance, Legal Services and Marine Laws & Practices in China, Professional Liability Insurance, KCRC Intermodal Service, Electronic Carrier Notification, Freight Documentation System, China Transport Market in 21 Century, Information Technology in Logistics Seminar, Joint Seminar ¡V HKSTLA/HKLA/CRUL, Presentation of AMS Service, AMS Workshop, Textiles Import/Export Arrangements, Brief Introduction of RFID, Package Limitation in Sea Transport and Labour Law & Tax Problem in PRC etc.
  • HKSTLA is active in providing educational courses to enhance the professional standards of shipping and logistics industry in Hong Kong. Such as Shipping Logistics and Practice, General Practices of Shipping & Transport, Freight Transport Documentation & Legal Implications, Information Technology in Logistics, Management & Marketing in Logistics and Integrated transport & Distribution Systems Courses, to provide corresponding training within seafreight forwarding and logistics;
  • Organised a number of visits to terminals and port facilities such as Kwai Chung Terminals, and the Yantian, Shekou, Nanhai, Huangpu, Chiwan and Pearl River Delta ports in China.
  • Exhibit for China Int’L Marine Fair, it is not only to let friend of shipping and Logistics industry to know more the association and gained more acceptance and the recognition. But also can provide our member have chance to promote their service.
  • Organised a tour of Shanghai & Beijing and while there visited government officials.
  • Represented members in local and international negotiations, corresponded with the IADA on surcharges levied by the PRC and with the TIS on group bonds.
  • HKSTLA application for “Develop a Technology Demonstration Project to Promote IT Usage among Logistics SMEs in Hong Kong” has been approved by the SME Development Fund from the Trade and Industry Department, HKSAR.The funding has been granted to carry the project for 18 months.   • Provide advisory service on Mainland and Hong Kong Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement (CEPA), and also on Shipping and Logistics Industry.

  • HKSTLA provides Banner Ads, Web-link, Free Web Page and also Recruitment Page to all association members.
  • HKSTLA holds annual sports tournaments for members. Events include bowling, golf, football and snooker;
  • HKSTLA organises an annual dinner every year during March to which all association members, representatives of shipping lines, freight forwarders and logistics companies, freight related liaison groups (such as the HK Shippers’ Council and Transport Constituency Legislative Councillor) and terminal operators are invited. The dinner has an average attendance of several hundred guests; and

  • Recreational activities among the members. Such as Autumn rejoicing dinner party, Seafood cuisine in Lantau Island, Vegetarian Lunch in Buddha Statue, Lantau Island and 2 days 1 night in Shenzhen tour etc;
  • HKSTLA participates many social and charity events, likes BrightenHK Youth Volunteer Programme, Po Leung Kuk Charity Walk, and Mission Hill Charity Golf Cup; to encourage members to establish a healthy life and contribute to the society.
  • The regular newsletter ensures that all our members are kept fully informed of the latest developments in the industry. Members are also able to access up-to-date information such as Seafreight Accessorial charge, the member name list, message board, Job Recruit and other government/association/organization site link information etc;

Hong Kong’s shipping and logistics industry is increasingly being challenged on a number of fronts, such as the development of ports elsewhere and the growth of competition from other forms of transport. To cope with these changes, our members seek through the Association for ways to adapt in the new environment. The Association intends, therefore, to press on with its focus of promoting the members’ interest, to increase the levels of communication with the relevant authorities and other business associations. In addition, the Association would take a more active role in assisting members in the development of new businesses and to explore new markets.
